This year we are focusing our 6th grade service learning activities on raising money for improved sanitation and related hygiene education to citizens of developing countries. The theme is Kokua from Kohala, and represents a yearlong service project to aid the people of Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. We have seen that service to others provides a greater perspective on the students’ own lives and community by connecting them to people and places they would otherwise not know. Providing opportunities for youth to gain awareness beyond themselves is crucial for their emotional and social development. Through this, students are empowered with the knowledge that they are capable, valuable, and important contributors to society. To date, this year’s students have held bake sales, washed windows, pulled weeds, coordinated a month-long swim event, washed cars, and sold rootbeer floats and t-shirts at the Kohala Country Fair to raise money for water resources for the people of Haiti. Ongoing monthly projects include helping at the local thrift store, mentoring children at A+ and packing food for the local food pantry. |
